Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (2-2) came out on the wrong end of a 60-56 decision in a home game against Alvernia University (4-1). The contest featured a few momentum swings, with the Ospreys leading by 11, trailing by 15 and pulling within three before ultimately falling short.
Sophomore point guard
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) scored a career-high 24 points to lead all players. Fathi shot a 9-11 from the field (81.8%), including a near-perfect 6-7 from three-point range (85.7%).
Trina Deveney-Bethea (Mays Landing/Cedar Creek) hit double figures with 10 points followed by
Skylar Fowlkes (Vineland/Vineland) with eight markers.
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with five assists, four steals and three points.
Stockton trailed 10-9 after one quarter and 19-11 in the second period before surging ahead with a 15-2 run for a 26-21 lead at the break. Fathi led the charge with six points and Deveney-Bethea added four counters.
The advantage reached 11 points at 32-21 in the third quarter, however Stockton went scoreless for the last 7:18 of the period while Alvernia reeled off 19 unanswered points for a 40-32 count after three periods.
The Ospreys faced a 49-34 deficit with 5:41 remaining in the game but staged a rally try by outscoring the Golden Wolves 22-10 over the next five minutes. Fathi scored 14 points and Fowlkes capped the comeback with a layup that made it 59-56 with 20 seconds on the clock, but an Alvernia free throw sealed the final score at 60-56.
Kaylah Williams paced the Golden Wolves with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Taliyah Malone sank four three-pointers and finished with 14 points for the visitors.
Stockton will begin NJAC play with a road game at Rowan University on Tuesday at 530 p.m.
