Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (5-3, 3-1 NJAC) topped Rutgers-Newark (4-5, 1-3 NJAC) 75-64 in the second consecutive home game for the Ospreys, both of which were conference victories. Stockton shot 86.4% (19-22) at the free throw line on the night.
Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) led the Ospreys with a monster game of 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his first college double-double. Gaither went a perfect 10-10 at the line, led all players on the glass and tied for game-high honors in scoring.
Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic) scored 18 points and dished a game-high four assists while
Diante Miles (Wildwood/Wildwood) and
Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) contributed 10 points apiece. Lawrence also grabbed six boards.
Easy baskets were hard to come by for Stockton as Rutgers-Newark played its trademark staunch defense. After scoring just 10 points in the first 7:30 of the game, the Ospreys created some breathing room with a 24-11 run.
Lawrence scored six points and Miles netted his team's last 10 counters as the margin ballooned to 17 at 34-17. Stockton led 38-26 at the break behind Miles' 10 markers plus eight by Anguelov and seven by Lawrence.
The Ospreys equaled their largest lead of 17 three times in the first nine minutes of the second half before Rutgers-Newark reeled off 11 unanswered points to get within 58-52 with 9:20 remaining. A jumper by Anguelov and then six points by Gaither boosted the advantage to 66-52 with 5:54 on the clock.
Stockton led by double digits the rest of the way for the 75-64 triumph. Gaither poured in 16 points and Anguelov added 10 markers as the duo accounted for 26 of their team's 37 second-half points.
Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd matched Gaither with 20 points for Rutgers-Newark. Kelvin Marshall scored 11 points for the Scarlet Raiders.
Stockton will be on the road on Saturday for an NJAC game at William Paterson at 3:00 p.m.
