Stockton Prevails 92-91 in Overtime

Wayne, N.J. – Stockton University (6-3, 4-1 NJAC) saw a four-point lead evaporate in the last 35 seconds of regulation but prevailed 92-91 over William Paterson (2-7, 0-5 NJAC) in overtime. The victory was the third straight for the Ospreys, who went 23-28 (82.1%) at the free throw line.
 
Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Gaither shot 18-20 (90%) at the stripe and also scored eight of Stockton's 13 points in overtime.
 
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) went 6-11 (54.5%) beyond the arc and poured in 22 points to go with six rebounds and six assists in 38 minutes before fouling out. Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) also hit double digits with 10 markers.
 
The Ospreys got off to a slow start, hitting just 35.5% from the floor in the first half, but they managed to lead 31-30 at the break with six of their 11 field goals coming from beyond the arc. Stockton shot 53.6% as the scoring pace accelerated in the second half but trailed for all but 25 seconds during the first 14 minutes of the period.
 
Two three-pointers by Campbell and one each from Lawrence and Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic) during a 12-5 run gave the Ospreys a 70-63 lead with 3:17 to go. Stockton later led 77-73 after two free throws by Gaither with 35 seconds left.
 
Three Pioneer free throws made it 77-76 before two more from the line by Gaither upped the margin to three at 79-76 with 13 seconds on the clock. Tyreek Montgomery buried a three-pointer with five ticks remaining to force overtime at 79-79.
 
The teams went back and forth in OT and Stockton trailed 89-88 with a minute to play. Jalen Collins (Blackwood/Triton) sank a layup at the 52-second mark and a free throw with 26 seconds on the clock for a 91-89 edge. Gaither made it 92-89 with a free throw and the Ospreys triumphed 92-91.
 
Montgomery paced William Paterson with 23 points followed by Andre Wells and David Martinez with 19 and 16 points respectively.
 
Stockton will play two home games next week starting with an NJAC matchup against The College of New Jersey on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
