Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (6-3, 4-0 NJAC) used balanced scoring and cruised to a 66-40 victory over Rutgers-Newark (1-8, 0-4 NJAC) on Wednesday night. 10 players scored for the Ospreys in the game, led by
Trina Deveney-Bethea (Mays Landing/Cedar Creek) with a game-high 16 points, as Stockton remained unbeaten in league play.
The Scarlet Raiders took off quickly to start the game, pulling out to a 7-4 lead just two minutes into the contest. After that, it was all Stockton as the home team ended the first period scoring 21 of the next 26 points to take a 23-12 advantage after one frame.
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) topped the Ospreys with seven points as Stockton hit 9-13 (69.2%) from the field.
The pace slowed in the second period as both teams had a tough going finding the basket. Stockton was able to stretch the lead to 37-17 in a 14-5 quarter.
Fathi and Deveney-Bethea scored nine and eight points respectively for the half, with Deveney-Bethea grabbing four rebounds. Stockton's defense forced 11 turnovers that led to 16 points during the first 20 minutes of play.
The teams each scored 15 points apiece during the third quarter, allowing Stockton to maintain the 20-point advantage at 52-32, heading to the final frame. The Ospreys took the final period 14-8 as every player saw action for Stockton.
Fathi finished with 13 markers, while
Lauren Winant (Middletown/Middletown South) scored 10 points with a career-high four steals.
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) topped all players with nine rebounds, with Deveney-Bethea grabbing eight caroms, as Stockton held a 42-25 advantage on the glass.
Rutgers-Newark was led by Samiyah Horton with 15 points as the only player in double figures for the Scarlet Raiders.
Stockton will travel to Wayne, NJ for their next game as the Ospreys will face William Paterson on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 pm.
