Reading, PA – Stockton University (2-1) dropped their first game of the season, as the Ospreys lost to Alvernia (1-2) by a 12-3 score on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman
Kevin Novobilsky (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) and
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) led the Ospreys with two hits each.
Â
Stockton grabbed an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the second when Novobilsky doubled and scored on a Kaplan RBI. Unfortunately for the Ospreys it was all Golden Wolves from there on out. The home squad scored twice in their half of the second, then tacked on five more markers in the next frame for a 7-1 margin.
Â
A single tally in the fifth followed by a four spot in the sixth for Alvernia gave the Wolves and insurmountable lead at 12-1. The Ospreys showed some toughness, scoring twice in the top of the ninth.
Â
Jimmy Silvano (Blackwood/Paul VI) walked, then Kaplan and
Mike Costanzo (Williamstown/Williamstown) followed with singles to load the bases.
Â
Silvano scored on a fielder's choice before
Tim Mastrogiovanni (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) knocked in Kaplan for his first career RBI at Stockton, but the momentum ended the as the final score was set at 12-3 for Alvernia.
Â
Freshman
Zack McCabe (Jackson/Jackson Memorial), the first of five hurlers for the Ospreys, took the hill for his first career start, suffered the loss, tossing 2.2 innings with one strikeout.
Â
Stockton will return home for a doubleheader against Castleton on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am in Galloway.
