Stockton Splits Doubleheader with Castleton

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-2) played a doubleheader against Castleton (2-3) and came away with a split of the twin bill on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans, from Castleton, Vermont, captured the first game by a slim 2-1 score, before Stockton rolled in the nightcap 12-2.

Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) won his second game of the season, while freshmen teammates C.J. Fredericks (Jobstown/Northern Burlington) and Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) blasted home runs. It was Avagnano's first career round tripper.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Stephen DeMilio (Tuckerton/Pinelands Regional) and the Spartans Riley Orr. The visitors plated a run in the third inning for a 1-0 lead, while Orr held the Ospreys hitless through 5.2 innings. Antonio Gatti (Howell/Howell) singled with two outs in the sixth to break the drought.

The Ospreys gained some life in the bottom of the seventh, when Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) singled and came around on a double by Mike Costanzo (Williamstown/Williamstown) to knot the game at 1-1. Castleton regained the lead 2-1 with a single tally in the eighth frame.

Stockton had one last chance in the home half of the ninth but a diving catch in centerfield robbed Kevin Novobilsky (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) of extra bases as Stockton fell by the 2-1 final score, in a crisply played time of 2:01. DeMilio tossed six strong innings, allowing one run and striking out seven, but did not figure in the decision.

Game two was all Ospreys as Schiattarella was solid again. The senior received all the runs he would need in the third inning as Stockton scored three times on four hits for a 3-0 advantage after three innings.

The Ospreys would tack on nine more runs in the final four at bats for the convincing 12-2 win. The big blows came in the bottom of the seventh when Fredericks blasted his second homer of the season, this time a three-run shot. Avagnano added the exclamation point with a two-run blast an inning later to cap the rout.

Stockton banged out 17 hits in the second game led by Novobilsky and Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) with three hits each. Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan), Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) and
Fredericks all rapped a pair of hits each, with Antonucci making a spectacular diving catch in center field in the sixth frame to keep the Spartans off the board.

Schiattarella scattered three hits while striking out seven and allowing one run in earning his second win of the season.

Stockton will travel to Aston, PA on Tuesday for the next game. The Ospreys will take on Neumann University at 3:30 pm.
