Auburndale, Fla. – Stockton University (5-5) evened its overall record by outscoring St. Norbert (Wis.) (4-7) 16-12 in a slugfest that saw the Ospreys register 18 hits, including six that went for extra bases. Stockton scored in six of its eight offensive turns.
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert),
Antonio Gatti (Howell/Howell) and
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) led the Ospreys with three hits and two RBI apiece. Nitti and Gatti each scored three runs while Ford scored twice. Gatti walked twice and stole three bases as well.
The Ospreys trailed 6-5 after three innings and took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Steinert) stroked an RBI single to tie the game and then scored the go-ahead run at 7-6 on an RBI triple by
Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan).
Stockton then broke the game open with five runs in the sixth frame.
Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) doubled home two runs while Nitti rapped an RBI single and scored on a balk, and Antonucci plated Talbot with a sacrifice fly to make it 12-6.
After St. Norbert got within 13-9, the Ospreys created some distance with three runs in the eighth inning.
Kevin Novobilsky (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) singled home two runs and Nitti produced an RBI on a sacrifice fly for a sizeable 16-9 advantage. The Green Knights scored three times in the top of the ninth before the final out in the 16-12 Stockton triumph.
Sciarrotta finished with two hits and three RBI. Antonucci, Talbot and Novobilsky tallied two hits and two RBI apiece. Overall, seven Ospreys finished with multiple hits in the game.
Robert Jeans (Toms River/TR North), the second of six Stockton pitchers used in the game, earned his first career win with 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
St. Norbert's Sebastian Dubois hit for the cycle in going 5-6 with five RBI and two runs. Caden Uhlenbrauck went 3-6 with three runs for the Green Knights.
Stockton will face Anderson University (Ind.) in Davenport, Florida tomorrow morning at 9:15 a.m.
