Galloway, N.J. – After setting a school record with nine consecutive wins, Stockton University (9-2) suffered its first defeat since the season opener on February 18 as the Ospreys fell to Moravian (5-5) 17-14.
Freshman
Aubrey Giordano (Mt. Olive/Mt. Olive) tied the school record of seven goals in a game for the third time this season.
Isabella Marinello (West Caldwell/Caldwell) contributed two goals and two assists.
Giordano and Marinello scored 40 seconds apart to give Stockton an early 2-1 lead, but Moravian answered with four straight goals to go up 5-2.
Lilly Alessandro (Jenkintonwn, Pa./Abington) and
Mary McLaughlin (Somers Point/Mainland) then potted goals to get the Ospreys within 5-4.
The Greyhounds netted three markers in a row for an 8-4 count on the way to a 9-6 Stockton deficit at halftime despite two tallies by Giordano in the second quarter.
The visitors doubled the Ospreys 6-3 in the third stanza to extend to 15-9, with Alessandro, McLaughlin and
Margot Costello (South Brunswick/South Brunswick) scoring for Stockton in the period.
In the fourth quarter, Giordano tossed in four goals and Marinello added one as the Ospreys tried to rally, but they were unable to get closer than three and suffered the 17-14 setback.
Alessandro finished with two goals, one assist and a game-high five ground balls for Stockton. McLaughlin totaled two goals, a team-high five draw controls plus four ground balls.
Devin King paced Moravian with five goals and two assists while Megan Donnelly registered five goals, one assist and 15 draw controls. Alex Cherenson scored four markers for the Greyhounds.
Stockton will take a break of a week and a half before starting NJAC play with a road game at Ramapo on April 8 at 1 p.m.
