Stockton Holds Off Montclair State for 16-15 Win

Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (11-4, 3-2 CLC) wrapped up its inaugural season of Coastal Lacrosse Conference play with a 16-15 victory over Montclair State (7-7, 1-3). The Ospreys built a seven-goal lead and held off a late rally by the Red Hawks.

Reegan Capozzoli (Wayne/Wayne Valley) led Stockton with four goals and one assist to tie for game-high scoring honors with five points. Brendan McHale (Montville/Montville) equaled his career high with three goals.

The Ospreys jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind two goals apiece from Capozzoli and McHale plus one each by Sean Haddock (Hightstown/Hightstown) and Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph). Montclair State later closed the gap to 7-6.

Stockton responded with three of the last four goals of the first half, capped by a Capozzoli marker with seven seconds left that gave the Ospreys a 10-7 lead at the break.

Stockton blanked Montclair State 3-0 in the third quarter on tallies by Colin Hopkins (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Twp.), Hayden Smallwood (Margate/Ocean City) and Daniel Amores (West Caldwell/Caldwell). Capozzoli netted his third of the game 53 seconds in to the fourth period to increase the lead to 14-7.

The Red Hawks reeled off five goals in four minutes to get within 14-12 before McHale completed his hat trick. After MSU made it 15-13, Brendan Scanlon (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) netted the clincher with 2:20 remaining for a 16-13 lead.

Montclair State scored 10 seconds later and again with 33 ticks left to cut the lead to one at 16-15. The Red Hawks won the ensuing faceoff and had a shot to tie, but Stockton goalkeeper Colin Bernstein (Warrington/Central Bucks South) made his 19th save of the game to seal the one-goal triumph.

Bernstein's 19 stops were one off his career high. In addition to his game-winning goal, Scanlon chipped in with a game-high three caused turnovers plus three ground balls.

Tyler McCreery and Ethan Mounier scored four goals apiece for the Red Hawks. MSU goalie David Metzger made 21 saves.

Stockton will finish the regular season with two non-conference home games in the next week, starting with a matchup against Arcadia University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
