Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (19-16, 6-8 NJAC) scored 19 runs in an NJAC doubleheader at Montclair State (21-9, 8-6) but fell 12-8 and 14-11. The Ospreys registered 29 hits on the day.
In the first game,
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) went 3-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI while
Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan) had three hits, two RBI and a stolen base.
Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) was 2-4 with a double, three runs, two RBI and a walk.
Trailing 4-3, Stockton pulled ahead in the top of the third on an RBI double by Avagnano followed by RBI singles from Talbot and Antonucci for a 6-4 lead. The Ospreys added two unearned runs in the fifth frame for an 8-4 advantage.
Montclair State then scored four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth frames to down Stockton 12-8. Stockton used three pitchers in the game, with
Kyle Cipolla (Westwood/Westwood) tossing 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Kevin Novobilsky (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) followed up a five-hit game yesterday with four hits, three runs, an RBI, a double and a walk in the nightcap.
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) went 3-6 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Avagnano had two more hits, two runs and two RBI.
Stockton trailed 7-2 after six innings before trying to rally. In the top of the seventh, two unearned runs were followed by a sacrifice fly RBI from Talbot and an RBI double by Antonucci that got the Ospreys within 7-6.
Montclair State extended to 9-6 but Stockton fought back again in the eighth frame. Nitti rapped an RBI double and Avagnano contributed a sacrifice fly that trimmed the margin to one again at 9-8. The Red Hawks responded with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to end Stockton's rally and the Ospreys fell 14-11.
Miles Feaster and Anthony Guarino paced Montclair State with six and five hits in the doubleheader respectively.
Stockton will start the last week of the regular season with a non-conference game at FDU-Florham on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
