Stockton Sweeps Doubleheader Against Gothic Knights

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (15-10, 3-0 NJAC) ended a six-game week, with a doubleheader sweep over New Jersey City University (10-14, 1-4 NJAC) by scores of 6-1 and 12-9 on Saturday afternoon. Kevin Novobilsky (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.), Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) and Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) all had three hits on the day, with Novobilsky smashing home runs in each contest.

Stockton jumped out early in game one, when Novobilsky smashed his first-round tripper of the day, with Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) aboard with a single for a 2-0 lead. The Ospreys padded the lead with three markers in the fourth inning for a 5-0 advantage.

Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) doubled, and Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) was hit by a pitch before Ford plated Kaplan with a base hit. An error allowed two more runs to score in the frame for the five-run margin. Both teams scored a single run over the next two innings, ending the scoring for the first game in the 6-1 victory for Stockton.

Starter Antonio Sansone (Middletown/Middletown North) threw the first six innings allowing two hits, one run and struck out seven for the second win of his rookie season.

The nightcap was a high scoring affair with the squads combining for 21 runs and 24 hits. NJCU broke out for three runs in the top of the first, before Stockton tallied four of their own for a 4-3 lead after one stanza.  Fabrizzi had a big hit in the inning, driving in a pair of runs.

The Ospreys scored twice more in the second and another solo run in the third for a 7-3 lead. The Gothic Knights closed to within two at 7-5 in the fifth, but Stockton answered with a pair on a Ford base hit to extend the margin to 9-5 after five innings.

NJCU scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning to slice the lead to 9-8, before Novobilsky smacked his second homer of the day to give the home team a little breathing room at 10-8. The Knights again got within one at 10-9, but Stockton put the game away with two more in their half of the eighth inning.

With the bases loaded and none out, Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) doubled in two insurance runs for the 12-9 lead. Reece Miller (Toms River/Toms River East) came in to close the door, tossing two scoreless frames and striking out three for his third save, giving Stephen DeMilio (Tuckerton/Pinelands Regional) his second win of the year.

Stockton will play on Tuesday at home against #2 Salisbury for their next matchup. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
