Stockton Sweeps Kean 4-1 and 9-1

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (11-13, 3-3 NJAC) evened its conference record by sweeping Kean University (17-9, 2-4 NJAC) 4-1 and 9-1 in five innings. The Ospreys rapped 17 hits and two pitchers held the Cougars to just two runs on the day.

The two victories brought Stockton head coach Mavreen Hering to the 150-win mark for her career. In her eighth season at Stockton, Hering is now 150-121-1 (.553 winning percentage).

In the opener, Michaela Luyber (Bordentown/Bordentown) went 2-3 with a run and an RBI while Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) was 2-3 with a run and freshman Madison Manera (Clayton/Clayton) registered her first career multi-hit game with two safeties.

Luyber stroked an RBI single and James scored on a throwing error on the play for an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kean got on the board in the fourth frame to trim the margin to a single run at 2-1.

Stockton added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a leadoff single by Luyber. Two batters later, Kayla Posten (Cherry Hill/CH West) smashed her second home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field that set the final score for the 4-1 victory.

Osprey pitcher Nicole Smith (Mt. Bethel, Pa./Bangor Area) scattered six hits with two strikeouts and no walks to earn her third win of the season. Smith induced 13 groundouts. Gianna Pickens and Andee Perseponko had two hits apiece for Kean.

Charli Czaczkowski (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) went 2-3 with three RBI and a run in the nightcap. Vanessa Tancini (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) added two hits, two runs and an RBI while Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) was 2-2 with an RBI and a walk.

The Ospreys jumped out a 3-0 lead on RBI singles by Patterson and Posten in the first inning followed by Czaczkowski in the second frame. Kean scored its lone run in the third inning before Stockton brought the run rule into effect with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The big inning featured RBI singles by Tancini and pinch-hitter Brittany Rifenburg (Spotswood/Spotswood) plus an RBI groundout by Madison Kelly (Franklinville/Delsea) and an unearned run scored by James. Czaczkowski ended the game with a two-run single that capped the 9-1 triumph.

Nerina Tramp (Blackwood/Highland) tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts for her team-leading fifth win of the season. Melody Caces registered two of Kean's three hits.

Stockton will be home again on Tuesday for an NJAC doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark that begins at 3 p.m.
