Stockton Opens Season with 4-1 Victory

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (1-0) saw their youth come to the forefront as the Ospreys downed Centenary University (0-1) by a 4-1 score in the 2023 season opener for both squads. Freshman Joseph A. Carbone (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) led the attack with the first two points of his career on a pair of assists.

Stockton wasted no time in getting on the board as Tommy Osterman (Kinnelon/Kinnelon) headed in his first carer goal at 2:27 for a 1-0 lead. His header off a free kick from Jake Homowitz (Tinton Falls/Christian Brothers Academy) gave the Ospreys the one goal advantage that would last until the break.

The Cyclones knotted the match 2:09 into the second stanza on a goal from Andres Casanova, but the marker was short lived. 1:13 later, Antonio Matos (Hammonton/St. Augustine Prep) scored the eventual game winner off a pass from Uche Wokocha (Galloway/St. Augustine Prep) for a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Joseph P. Carbone (Pequannock/Pequannock) extended the margin to 3-1 on Joseph A. Carbone's first career point on a helper in the 73rd minute. Joseph A. Carbone then struck again in the 83rd minute on a pass to fellow rookie JP Candela (Howell/Howell) for the 4-1 margin. It was Candela's first career tally and gave Stockton the three goal win.

Freshman Brady Bartletta (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) earned his first career win in net. Cyclones netminder Kevin Velasquez Mejia kicked out seven Osprey shots on the night.

Stockton will travel to Boyd's MD. on Tuesday for their next match, as the Ospreys will take on Washington & Lee University. Game time is set for 4 pm.
