Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-0-3, 0-0-1 NJAC) opened the 2023 NJAC season with a 1-1 tie against Rutgers-Newark (2-4-3, 0-0-1 NJAC) on Sunday night.
Aiden Hoenisch (Bordentown/Notre Dame) was the goal scorer for the Ospreys.
Stockton wasted no time in potting their lone tally of the match. At 3:38 of the first half, Hoenisch took a pass from
Joseph Carbone (Pequannock/Pequannock) and deposited a one-timer into the upper left corner for his team-leading third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders ramped up the pressure on offense soon after, firing seven shots with four on net, but could not break through as the ospreys held the one goal margin at the half.
The visitors continued to mount an offensive before finally getting the match tying marker. After a Stockton foul, the ensuing free kick at 68:00, found Nicholas Gomez who hit from point blank range to knot the contest at 1-1.
Just over four minutes later,
JP Candela (Howell/Howell) took a free kick that netminder Pedro Flores tipped over the crossbar to keep the match deadlocked at 1-1. Both squads had one more chance each but could not break the tie and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Brady Bartletta (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) made five saves in the game for Stockton. Flores kicked away three Stockton shots for Rutgers-Newark.
Stockton will travel to #5 Montclair State for their next match on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 7pm.
