Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (8-6, 1-0 NJAC) started conference play with a 3-1 victory over Rowan University (3-11, 0-2 NJAC). The Ospreys, who were playing their first home match of the season, dropped the first set 25-22 before roaring back to take the next three 25-13, 26-24, 25-20.
A pair of freshmen led the offense as
Nicole Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) spiked a match-high 18 kills followed by
Rileigh Wilson (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) with a career-high 13 kills as Stockton won for the sixth time in its last seven matches.
Kate Louer (Clifton/Clifton) recorded a match-high 17 digs plus nine kills. Freshman
McKenna Ritchie (Newark, Del./Newark Charter School) chipped in with 14 digs, four assists, two aces and two kills while
Jaylah Rolle (Williamstown/Williamstown) contributed a match-high six blocks plus six kills.
Setters
Regan Mendick (Newark, Del./Red Lion Christian) and
Aubrey Rentzel (York, Pa./Central York) dealt 27 and 20 assists respectively. Rentzel added eight digs and Mendick served two aces.
After dropping a close first set, Stockton dominated the second stanza 25-13 behind four kills by Palmer and three from Rolle. The third set was tied nine times, including at 24-24 before the Ospreys prevailed on a Rowan service error followed by sixth kill of the set by Wilson.
Stockton held a slim 17-16 edge in the fourth set before closing out the match with an 8-4 run for the 25-20 final. Wilson smacked five more kills and Palmer tallied four kills in the frame.
Ciara Bradley paced Rowan with 12 kills while Jena Kaul finished with 10 kills and eight digs. Profs' setter Brooke Adams dealt 41 assists to go with seven digs and two aces.
Stockton will play an NJAC match at New Jersey City University on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
