Reading, Pa. – After starting the season with two straight wins, Stockton University (2-1) suffered its first setback with a 69-62 defeat at Alvernia University (1-2). The Ospreys led through three quarters, but a 23-8 final period proved to be their undoing.
Grace Speer (Estell Manor/ACIT) scored a team-high 15 points for Stockton, followed by
ChiChi Wokocha (Galloway/Absegami) with a career-high 11 markers.
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) and
Lauren Winant (Middletown/Middletown South) finished with nine points apiece. Fathi also tallied five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Stockton broke out to a 23-14 lead after the first quarter. After Alvernia got within three in the second stanza, the Ospreys reeled off 10 straight points for a 35-22 advantage before a late bucket by the home team made it 35-24 at the break.
Stockton fended off an Alvernia rally in the third quarter and took a 54-46 lead into the fourth period. The Ospreys suffered a shooting slump in the final frame, hitting just three of 21 shots (21.4%). Stockton managed to stay in front until the last 1:51 when the Golden Wolves closed with a 9-1 spurt to down the Ospreys 69-62.
Stockton will begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday when the Ospreys host FDU-Florham at 6:00 p.m.
