Swarthmore, Pa. – Stockton University (2-1) absorbed its first setback after beginning the season with a pair of victories as the Ospreys fell to Swarthmore (2-2) 73-63. Stockton defended very well, forcing 24 turnovers and blocking nine shots, but couldn't find the mark at the offensive end.
In just his third game as an Osprey,
Eriq Campbell (West Atco/Lindenwold) produced a double-double by scoring a game-high 24 points and tying for game-high honors with 10 rebounds. Campbell shot 9-18 (50%) from the field.
EJ Matthews-Spratley (Cherry Hill/CH East) also hit double digits with 14 points, grabbed seven boards and tied for game high with three assists. Sophomore
Andrew Crawford (Haddon Hts./Camden Catholic) tossed in a career-high eight points.
Shooting percentages told the story of the first half. Stockton shot 30.6% (11-36) from the field and trailed 43-31 to a Swarthmore team that hit 51.4% (18-35). The deficit was still 12 points with 17:56 remaining in the game.
Campbell and Matthews-Spratley led the charge with seven and four points respectively during a 13-1 run that pulled the Ospreys into a 46-46 tie after two free throws by
Jamar Johnson (Penns Grove/Penns Grove) with 8:24 on the clock.
Swarthmore answered with a 12-1 run that made it 58-47 with 5:33 left, but Stockton mustered one more rally attempt. A 10-2 spurt by the Ospreys in the next two minutes closed that gap to 60-57, however the Garnet fended off Stockton with six straight points and dealt the Ospreys the 73-63 defeat.
Although Stockton created opportunities in the second half, with 12 offensive rebounds and 12 Swarthmore turnovers, the Ospreys were unable overcome 24.3% (9-37) shooting including 1-15 (6.7%) from three-point range in the period.
Stockton will play their fourth straight road game on Thursday when they visit Eastern University for their final tuneup before the start of NJAC play. Tip-off will be at 7:00 p.m.
