Ewing, N.J. – Led by a school-record 45 points from
Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic), Stockton University (5-1, 2-0 NJAC) dealt The College of New Jersey (6-1, 1-1 NJAC) its first loss of the season with a thrilling 105-99 victory over a TCNJ squad that is ranked #15 in the D3hoops.com national poll as well as the defending NJAC champion.
Stockton trailed by six with two minutes remaining but closed the game with a 14-2 run for its third straight win. Anguelov scored 10 points during the decisive spurt and broke the Stockton record of 41 points by Carl Cochran in 1997.
Anguelov eclipsed the 30-point mark for the third straight game. He shot 17-27 (63%) from the field including 6-11 (54.5%) from three-point range.
Eriq Campbell (West Atco/Lindenwold) and
Devon Johnson (Pine Hill/Overbrook) also reached double figures with 17 and 15 points respectively.
Freshman
Jahmir Payoute (Irvington/Snyder) contributed career highs of eight points and eight rebounds. Stockton did most of its damage near the basket and in transition with 52 points in the paint and 30 fast-break points.
Stockton trailed by 12 with 7:20 remaining and faced a 97-91 deficit with two minutes to go. A pair of three-pointers by Anguelov tied the game at 97 apiece with 1:15 on the clock. After a TCNJ miss, Anguelov gave the Ospreys a 99-97 edge with two free throws at the 37-second mark.
Two free throws by Campbell upped it to 101-97, but a quick basket by the Lions made it a one-possession game at 101-99. A layup by Campbell and two more free throws from Anguelov closed out the 105-99 triumph. Anguelov scored 25 of Stockton's 53 second-half points.
In the first half, Anguelov netted nine points during a 23-10 run that gave Stockton its largest lead at 32-20. TCNJ fought back to take slim 53-52 edge at halftime. The lead changed hands three times in the second half, with the Ospreys on the positive side at the end as a result of their strong finish.
Nick Koch paced TCNJ with 28 points followed by Matthew Okorie with 16 markers and Jonathan Okocha with 15.
Stockton will host William Paterson in a conference game at The Sports Center on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
