Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (2-2) saw an early 4-3 lead evaporate in a 12-4 defeat to Alvernia University (2-1) in the home opener for the Ospreys. The game was called after seven innings due to rain. Ten of the runs scored by Alvernia were unearned.
Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) extended his reached base streak to 30 games dating back to last season with two hits and a walk.
Gavin Malave (Mountainside/Governor Livingston) also stroked two hits as he and Fiore accounted for four Stockton's seven safeties.
Alvernia broke on top with two runs in the top of the first, but the Ospreys tied the game on a two-run single by
Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert) in the bottom of the second that scored Fiore and
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall), who walked twice in the contest.
The Golden Wolves went back in front 3-2 before Malave brought home Bresnen and
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth that put Stockton in front 4-3.
The lead was short-lived as Alvernia tied the game 4-4 with an unearned run in the next half inning. The game slipped away from the Ospreys in the sixth frame as Alvernia scored eight times with two outs, including seven unearned runs.
A single by Malave was Stockton's only hit in the last two innings and the game was called following the bottom of the seventh due to rain, going down as a 12-4 setback for the Ospreys.
Starting pitcher
Rob Jeans (Toms River/TR North) hurled five innings and left with the score tied 4-4. He was not involved in the decision.
Ben Houghton went 2-3 with four RBI and a run while Mike Ramundo was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI for Alvernia. Logan Nelson contributed two hits, two runs, two RBI, two walks and three stolen bases for the Golden Wolves.
Stockton's next game will be at Swarthmore on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
