Auburndale, Fla. – Stockton University (4-6) suffered a pair of defeats in Florida on Sunday. The Ospreys fell to Illinois Wesleyan (5-3) 21-6 and then stumbled 15-7 against unbeaten Roger Williams (R.I.) (4-0).
Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert) went 2-4 with two RBI and a stolen base against Illinois Wesleyan.
Tony Gatti (Howell/Howell) was 1-2 with two runs and a stolen base while
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) totaled one hit, two runs, one RBI and one walk.
Illinois Wesleyan scored eight runs in the first two innings and the Ospreys were unable to overcome the early deficit. An RBI single by Bresnen scored Avagnano in the second inning to get Stockton on the board.
Avagnano and
Austin Beard (Toms River/TR South) rapped RBI singles during a three-run third inning that was Stockton's best of the game, and Bresnen added his second RBI as part of a two-run fifth frame, but Stockton suffered the defeat.
Against Roger Williams, Gatti extended his hitting streak to 10 games by going 4-5 with a double, four runs and a stolen base while Avagnano smacked a double, walked three times and scored twice. Beard and
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) also contributed one hit and two RBI apiece.
Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as
Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) walked with the bases loaded and Beard rapped a two-run single that scored Avagnano and Gatti. The lead was short-lived as Roger Williams responded with six runs in the bottom of the first.
The Ospreys scored one run apiece in the third, fifth, eighth and ninth innings but were unable to stage a rally.
Stockton will take on Beloit College (Wis.) on Monday at 12:45 p.m.
