Stockton Falls Twice at #13 Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, Va. – Stockton University (1-5) played the first of its pair of doubleheaders against ranked opponents in Virginia this week. The Ospreys dropped the opening game to #13 Virginia Wesleyan (8-3) 5-0 and then were edged 2-1 by the Marlins in walkoff fashion.

In the opener, the first 18 Ospreys were retired in order before Emily Spencer (Southampton/Seneca) led off the seventh inning with a single to break up the perfect game with Stockton's only hit of the contest.

Virginia Wesleyan scored twice each in the second and fifth innings and added one run in the sixth frame for the 5-0 final. Mia Barone (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) pitched a solid relief stint, allowing one earned run plus one unearned on four hits in 3.2 innings.

Freshman pitcher Erica Zuckerberg (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) made her college debut with one inning of work in which she yielded one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Nerina Tramp (Blackwood/Highland) nearly led Stockton to victory with her arm and her bat in the nightcap. Tramp tossed a complete game and struck out two while giving up two runs on eight hits. The junior also stroked an RBI single.

Megan Sears (Oakland/Indian Hills) rapped two of Stockton's five hits in the game, which was scoreless after four innings. Megan Dignam (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) led off the fifth with a double. Two batters later, pinch runner Abigail Tunney (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) scored on Tramp's RBI single for a 1-0 edge.

Virginia Wesleyan answered with a run on two hits and a stolen base in the bottom of the fifth for a 1-1 tie. Stockton had runners on first and third with one out in the sixth after Sears singled and moved to third when Aubrey Jeffers (Lumberton/Rancocas Valley) reached on an error, but the Ospreys could not capitalize.

The Marlins later prevailed 2-1 on a walkoff bunt single with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Stockton will face another stiff test on Thursday with a doubleheader at 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon at 2:00 p.m.
