Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Stockton University (9-7) scored 12 runs in the last three innings to defeat Gwynedd Mercy (5-7) 14-7 for its fifth consecutive win. The Ospreys rapped 17 hits and stole six bases in the victory.
Eight Ospreys stroked two hits apiece led by
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) who went 2-5 with a double, three runs and three RBI. Avagnano extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Austin Beard (Toms River/TR South),
Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert),
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) and
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) contributed two hits and two RBI apiece, with Beard also scoring twice.
Stockton trailed 4-2 before scoring three times in the top of the seventh to pull ahead 5-4. Gwynedd Mercy quickly tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. The Ospreys then exploded for eight runs on four hits, three errors and three walks in the eighth frame.
Avagnano and Beard each ripped two-run doubles and Elder added an RBI triple in the decisive inning, during which Stockton vaulted ahead 13-5. Although the Griffins plated two runs in the bottom half, Bresnen delivered Avagnano with an RBI single in the ninth stanza to cap the 14-7 triumph.
Kyle Cipolla (Westwood/Westwood) earned the win out of the bullpen as he pitched three innings and allowed just an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Phil Santa Maria (Absecon/ACIT) and
Danny Snyder (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) also were solid in relief.
Santa Maria allowed one run with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched and Snyder tossed a perfect ninth frame with two strikeouts.
Stockton will play a doubleheader at McDaniel College on Saturday, with the first game starting at 11:30 a.m.
