Stockton Tops Montclair 15-11

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (10-5, 3-1 CLC) built a three-goal lead in the first quarter and stayed in front the rest of the way for a 15-11 victory over Montclair (4-7, 0-3 CLC). With the result, Stockton reached double digits in wins for the ninth consecutive full season.
 
Liam DiFonzo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Delco) led the Ospreys with a career-high four goals while Hayden Smallwood (Margate/Ocean City) tallied three goals and two assists for a game-high five points. Brendan McHale (Montville/Montville) scored three markers as well.
 
Stockton broke an early 1-1 tie with consecutive goals by Colin Hopkins (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Delco), Alex DeLierre (Basking Ridge/Bridgewater-Raritan) and Smallwood for a 4-1 lead after one quarter.
 
DiFonzo capped a three-goal burst in the second period to put the Ospreys on top 7-2 and the lead remained three or more for the rest of the game. DiFonzo netted two more goals during a 4-4 third quarter that ended with Stockton in front 11-6.
 
McHale and DiFonzo scored 27 seconds apart in the fourth period to give Stockton its largest lead at 15-7 with 7:06 remaining and the Ospreys went on to the 15-11 triumph.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Ben Blum (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) established a new career high with 13 saves. Brenden McSorley (Mantua/Clearview) and Matt Gibson (Cape May Point/Lower Cape May) anchored the defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers apiece.
 
Ryan Vierbuchen and Jack Cleary netted three goals apiece for Montclair. Red Hawks' goalie Brandon Shevins made 11 saves.
 
Stockton will have a week off to prepare for a Coastal Lacrosse Conference game at No. 8 ranked Christopher Newport next Saturday at noon.
