Newport News, Va. – Stockton University (10-6, 4-2 CLC) finished up Coastal Lacrosse Conference play with a 20-8 setback at No. 8 Christopher Newport (11-4, 4-1 CLC). The Ospreys finished third in the conference behind two teams ranked in top eight of the USILA national poll.
Hayden Smallwood (Margate/Ocean City) led Stockton with three goals while
Steven Woolery (Media, Pa./Penncrest) tallied one goal, a team-high three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Reegan Capozzoli (Wayne/Wayne Valley) struck first to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead, but CNU answered with five straight goals before Smallwood ended the run to make it 5-2 early in the second quarter.
After the Captains extended to 8-2, Stockton reeled off three straight markers as
Alex DeLierre (Basking Ridge/Bridgewater-Raritan), Woolery and
Noam Levy-Smith (Margate/Ocean City) hit the next to pull the Ospreys within 8-5.
Smallwood scored with 1:17 left in the first half and Stockton trailed 11-6 at the break. The Ospreys went scoreless for the entire third quarter and nearly 10 minutes of the fourth period before Smallwood netted his third marker of the game.
Freshman
Colin Wagner (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) scored Stockton's last goal in the 20-8 defeat. Rookie goalkeeper
Ben Blum (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) played 56:50 and made seven saves.
Robbie Adams and Kevin Miller paced Christopher Newport with four and three goals respectively. Andrew Cook added two goals and three assists for a game-high five points.
Stockton will finish the regular season with a road game at Muhlenberg College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
