Salisbury, Md. – Stockton University (23-15) finished the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at Salisbury University (34-1), which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and has lost just once all season.
The Ospreys stayed close to the Sea Gulls, who are on the short list of national championship favorites, falling 3-0 and 4-2.
Megan Dignam (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and
Megan Sears (Oakland/Indian Hills) each rapped a double for two of Stockton's three hits in the opener. After a first inning run by the home team, the Ospreys trailed just 1-0 into the bottom of the sixth.
Stockton got a runner to second base with less than two outs in three of its offensive turns but could not convert. A two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth set the final at 3-0.
Nerina Tramp (Blackwood/Highland) allowed just five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 5.1 innings pitched.
Alexa Panagopoylos (Atco/Hammonton) went 2-3 with a double and an RBI in the nightcap.
Emily Spencer (Southampton/Seneca) smacked her 14th double of the season to tie the school record and also scored once.
Spencer doubled and scored on an RBI single by Panagopoylos in the top of the first to give Stockton a quick 1-0 edge. Salisbury responded with single runs in the second and third frames plus two in the fifth for a 4-1 count.
Panagopoylos doubled in the sixth frame, and an RBI single by
Caitlin Cetrulo (Caldwell/James Caldwell) made it 4-2, but the Ospreys were unable to get any closer.
Stockton is the No. 4 seed for the NJAC Tournament and will host No. 5 seed The College of New Jersey in the first round on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
