2023-24 Men's Basketball Recap

Overview
Stockton Men's Basketball earned an NCAA Tournament berth for the third straight year and 19th time in the program's 52 seasons. The Ospreys finished second in the NJAC regular season standings and advanced to the NJAC championship game, ultimately ending the season with 17 wins (17-11 record).
 
Stockton led the NJAC in rebound margin (+5.1) and finished third in scoring (78.7 ppg) and free throw percentage (.747). The season featured a six-game winning streak, a trip to South Dakota to play in the Small College Basketball Champions Classic and Stockton's fifth straight appearance in the NJAC title game.
 
Ten Stockton players saw action in at least 19 of team's 28 games. The Ospreys set a school record for free throw percentage and came within one point of the mark for scoring average. Individually, four players averaged double figures in points.

Highlights
  • DJ Campbell led the NJAC in minutes played (36.2 mpg) and finished second in scoring (19.6 ppg), free throw percentage (.869), three-pointers (3.0/game) and steals (2.3 spg). Campbell also tied for fourth in the NJAC in blocks (0.9 bpg) and was seventh in three-point field goal percentage (.340), 10th in field goal percentage (.399) and 11th in rebounds (6.5 rpg).
  • Campbell scored at least 20 points in a game 13 times including four games over 30 markers. He poured in 39 points against Montclair on January 6 to tie the second-highest total in Stockton history.
  • Campbell enhanced his brilliant career by becoming Stockton's all-time leading scorer on February 14 against Kean, breaking the record of 2,124 career points by Carl Cochran (1993-97). He ended his time as an Osprey with a total of 2,178 points as well as a school-record 335 three-pointers.
  • In addition to his lofty scoring and shooting totals, Campbell concluded his career second in program history in steals (251), fourth in blocked shots (85), fifth in rebounds (668) and ninth in assists (256).
  • Tayvon Gaither had a breakout sophomore season, averaging 15.3 points per game and leading the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg). Gaither topped the team in field goal percentage (.544) and was outstanding at the free throw line, hitting 116-147 (.789).
  • The soph finished second in the NJAC in field goal percentage, fourth in free throw percentage, seventh in rebounds and 11th in scoring. Gaither had seven games over 20 points, including a career-high 36 against Rowan on January 17. He also posted the first three double-doubles of his career.
  • EJ Matthews-Spratley joined the team in late December and contributed an average of 17.2 points in 17 games. Matthews-Spratley shot 50.3% from the field, a torrid 48.3% from behind the arc and 83.8% from the charity stripe. He pulled down 5.1 rebounds from his guard spot and pilfered 23 steals, third on the team in just 17 games.
  • Martin Anguelov started all 19 games before suffering a season-ending injury but filled the stat sheet. Anguelov averaged 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He scored in double figures in 12 of his 19 starts and hit 41 three-pointers.
  • Rynell Lawrence played in all 28 games and made 26 starts, averaging 5.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Lawrence grabbed at least five rebounds in a game 10 times. He finished his career with 651 points, 427 rebounds and 197 assists.
  • Newcomers Jalen Collins and Christian Armstrong-Thomas bolstered the frontcourt, playing in 27 games each. Collins averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 49.7% from the field. Armstrong-Thomas chipped in with 4.8 and 4.4 rebounds per game. The pair blocked 22 shots combined, with Collins second on the team with 13 blocks.
  • Jamar Johnson (27 games), Charles Sapp (21 games) and freshmen Devon Johnson (22 games) and Andrew Crawford (25 games) provided valuable minutes off the bench. Jamar Johnson compiled a 1.8 assist/turnover ratio and 16 steals while playing 18.2 minutes per game. Devon Johnson scored 15 points in just 11 minutes against Montclair (2/3/24).
