Union, N.J. – Stockton University (9-8, 5-5 NJAC) led by eight at the half, but Kean University (8-9, 5-5 NJAC) overtook the Ospreys in the second half and dealt them a 57-55 setback. The result left both teams and New Jersey City in a three-way for fifth place in the conference.
Skylar Fowlkes (Vineland/Vineland) powered Stockton with a career-high 24 points plus 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Fowlkes shot 11-21 (52.4%) from the field and pilfered a game-high four steals.
Grace Speer (Estell Manor/ACIT) totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists while
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) also scored 10 points for the Ospreys. Stockton held Kean to 21 points in the first half but yielded 36 points to the Cougars in the last two quarters.
After a slim 13-12 edge at the end of the first stanza, the Ospreys used a 16-9 second period to take a 29-21 lead to the locker room at the break. Fowlkes propelled Stockton to the advantage with 15 of her team's 29 first-half points, including nine in the second quarter to help the Ospreys build their largest lead.
Kean pulled ahead late in the third period and Stockton faced a five-point deficit before a layup by Fowlkes cut the margin to 41-38 after three. The Ospreys briefly went ahead 44-43 on a Speer layup with 7:59 on the fourth-quarter clock, however Kean took the lead for good 22 seconds later.
Stockton got within one on a layup by
Katie Rausch (South Brunswick/South Brunswick) with 4:35 remaining and within two on a basket by Fowlkes with 2:23 to play, but the Ospreys were unable to regain the lead and suffered the 57-55 setback.
Stockton will be on the road again on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup at William Paterson.
