Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-2, 5-0 NJAC) playing for the first time in two weeks, shot a blistering 59.1% (13-22) in the second half and captured a gritty 96-85 victory over Gettysburg College (9-3) on Saturday afternoon.
EJ Matthews-Spratley (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill East) led four Ospreys in double figures with a career-high 41 points to lead the Ospreys.
Gettysburg came into the game ranked #13 by d3hoops.com, while Stockton was ranked #22.
The game was tightly contested through the first half as the teams went to the halftime break knotted at 44-44, as neither team was able to gain a led larger than seven points. The lead changed eight times with seven ties, during the first 20 minutes of play. Matthews-Spratley led all players with 23 markers on 8-13 (61.5%) shooting that include 4-7 from behind the arc.
The Bullets jumped out in the final frame, surging to a nine point lead at 56-47 with 16:44 left before Stockton started to crawl back. The Ospreys tied the match at 59-59 in a span of just over three minutes, led by eight points from
Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape).
Gettysburg took their last lead of the day at 65-64 when the Ospreys slowly pulled away. The home team was able to grind out tough points, extending the lead to as many 14 points over the final 11:07 to come away with the hard fought 96-85 win.
Matthews-Spratley became the third Osprey to reach the 40-point barrier, tying Carl Cochran with his 41 points, that included 14-16 from the free throw line, 11-13 in the second half, and shooting a torrid 11-14 (64.7%) for the game. Gaither added 22 markers, with 18 coming in the second half.
Eriq Campbell (West Atco/Lindenwold) chipped in with 14 points, with teammate
Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic) scoring 10 points and leading the team with four assists. Freshman
Logan Mckee (Glen Mills, PA/Phelps School) led all players with eight rebounds, with a pair of blocked shots.
Carl Schaller led five Bullets in double figures with 23 points, four assists and two blocks, with Akim Joseph and Nate Williams scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively. Jordan Stafford and Aiden Mess added 11 and 10 markers with Stafford pulling down seven rebounds to top the visitors.
Stockton will return to NJAC Play on Wednesday, when the Ospreys will travel to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers-Camden. Game time in scheduled for 7:30 pm.
