Stockton Wins Season Opener 17-10

Galloway, N.J. - Stockton University (1-0) built an early 5-2 lead and stayed ahead the rest of the way for a 17-10 victory over Neumann University in the season opener on a frigid Tuesday afternoon. Seven different Ospreys scored goals in the game.
 
Madison MacGillivray (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) led Stockton with career highs of five goals, six points and five draw controls while Shyanne Nucifora (Lacey Twp./Lacey Twp.) produced three goals plus game highs of four assists and seven points.
 
Julia Gibson (Cape May Point/Lower Cape May), a transfer from Palm Beach Atlantic, tallied four goals and two assists for six points in her first game as an Osprey. Isabella Marinello (West Caldwell/Caldwell) scored twice and Margot Costello (South Brunswick/South Brunswick) added one goal, one assist and a game-high seven ground balls.
 
Stockton broke a 2-2 tie with two straight goals by Gibson and then one by Nucifora for a 5-2 lead. Markers by MacGillivray and Costello later made it an 8-4 advantage at the half. MacGillivray then potted two more goals 38 seconds apart for a 10-4 lead early in the third quarter.
 
Neumann got within 11-7 in the first minute of the fourth period, but the Ospreys put the game away with five straight goals. MacGillivray led the run with two tallies while Marinello, Nucifora and Lilly Alessandro (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) netted one apiece as the lead grew to 16-7 with 7:12 left.
 
Neumann answered with three straight goals before Marinello sealed the 17-10 triumph with her second counter of the quarter.
 
Stockton goalkeeper Jordan Czaczkowski (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) made five saves and collected the win in her first career start. Alessandro led all players with six draw controls.
 
Lindsey Fagan paced Neumann with three goals and an assist followed by Cassidy Starner with two goals and an assist. Knights' goalkeeper Abbey Fenton finished with 12 saves as the Ospreys outshot the visitors 36-22.
 
Stockton will be home again on Saturday for a matchup with Haverford College at 1:00 p.m. that will be the first meeting ever between the two teams.
