Stockton Drops Season Opener to Arcadia

Galloway, N.J. - Stockton University (0-1) played its season opener on Monday afternoon but fell to Arcadia University (1-1) by a 5-2 score. The game was tied into the eighth inning when three runs by the visitors proved to be the difference.

Six Ospreys rapped one hit apiece for the Ospreys, with Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) going 1-2 with a double, run and an RBI. Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) was 1-3 with a double and an RBI as well.

Arcadia scored first before Stockton tied the game in the bottom of the third. Ford led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Gatti (Howell/Howell) two batters later.

Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and scored the go-ahead run on Kaplan's RBI double for a 2-1 edge. The Knights tied the game 2-2 on a solo homer by Griffin Murphy in the top of the seventh.

Arcadia plated three runs in the top of the eighth to make it 5-2. One Osprey apiece got hit by a pitch in the eighth and ninth frames, but Stockton was unable to rally and fell in the season opener.

Stockton starter Stephen DeMilio (Tuckerton/Pinelands) pitched four strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Zack McCabe (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) then yielded just one run in the next three frames, but neither he nor DeMilio was involved in the decision.

Murphy went 2-4 with four RBI for Arcadia. Anthony Bruno was 2-3 with a double, run and a walk. Cam Nebel allowed one hit in five scoreless innings of relief to earn the pitching win.

Stockton will play on the road at Alvernia University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
