Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-2) saw their offense explode on the day with 24 runs and 37 hits, in a doubleheader sweep over Keene State (0-3), by scores of 9-0 and 15-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Joe Gmitter (Hamilton/Steinert) led the Ospreys with seven hits on the day, while
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) broke the career doubles mark at Stockton.
The Ospreys jumped out early in the first game, scoring four times on three hits. Gmitter knocked in one run,
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) plated two more on a double, before,
Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert) tallied the fourth for a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Stockton added a trio of markers in the bottom of the second on two hits, one being Nitti's milestone double. The senior ripped a shot down the left field line for his 36th career double, breaking the mark set by Chris Crescenzi set in 1996.
The home team tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth and that was all starting pitcher
Stephen DeMilio (Tuckerton/Pinelands) would need. He tossed six strong innings, giving up just three hits with eight strikeouts and not allowing a walk in the 9-0 victory.
In the nightcap, Stockton kept up the onslaught, batting around in both of the first two innings while scoring seven times.
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) accounted for two of the runs with a home run, Gmitter plated another with
Joe Giori (Hamilton/Steinert) knocking in his first two RBI in a Stockton uniform.
Gmitter picked up his second RBI in the third frame, then
Tony Gatti (Howell/Howell) and Nitti each knocked in a pair in the fourth for a commanding 12-1 margin. Nitti's RBI came on a two-run homer.
Freshman
Chris Galasso (Matawan/Matawan) closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning with his first career hit. With the bases loaded, the rookie smashed a double to center, clearing the bases for his first three college RBI, finalizing the 15-4 rout.
Zack McCabe (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) earned his first win on the season with six innings of work with five strikeouts.
Evan McCue led the Owls with four hits on the day.
Stockton will play their last home game before Spring Break on Tuesday, when the Ospreys will face Arcadia. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 pm in Galloway.
