Stockton Falls to Bethel in Florida Finale

Winter Haven, Fla. – Stockton University (6-8) finished up its eight-game trip to Florida during spring break with an 8-3 setback to Bethel University (Minn.) (7-3). The Ospreys hit two homers in the game.

Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) went 2-4 with a double and a home run. Avagnano reached the 100-hit mark for his career with a double in the first inning. Freshman Dom Vizzoni (Trenton/Notre Dame) slugged his first career home run.

Bethel scored twice in the top of the first and Stockton got one back in the bottom half as Avagnano hit his milestone double and scored on an RBI single by Joe Gmitter (Hamilton/Steinert). The Ospreys faced a 5-1 deficit after Bethel put three runs on the board in the top of the second.

Vizzoni homered in the fifth inning to make it 5-2, but Stockton never got closer. Bethel added a run in the eighth frame and two more in the ninth before a solo homer by Avagnano in the bottom of the ninth set the final at 8-3.

Stockton used five pitchers in the game. Reece Miller (Toms River/TR East) retired all 11 batters that he faced with five strikeouts in 3.2 perfect innings. Antonio Sansone (Middletown/Middletown North) set down six of the seven batters that he saw, allowing just one walk in two scoreless frames.

After eight games in seven days in the Sunshine State, Stockton will have a week off before hosting a doubleheader against McDaniel on March 22 at 11:30 a.m.
