Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-10, 0-2 NJAC) opened the NJAC schedule on a down note, falling to Rutgers-Newark (10-11, 2-0 NJAC) by scores of 7-6 and 10-9 on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan) led the offense with four hits on the day.
The Scarlet Raiders plated a pair of unearned runs to start the first game before Stockton answered with a single marker in their half of the first inning. The Ospreys looked to take control with four runs in the third.
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) doubled in one run,
Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) picked up an RBI, then
Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert) knocked in two more for a 5-2 lead.
Michael Weinbel's two run homer for the visitors closed the margin to 5-4, then the Raiders plated three more in the top of the seventh for a 7-5 lead. Stockton was able to get their sixth run in the seventh stanza but could not score again and fell 7-6.
In the second game, the Ospreys jumped out again with five runs in the second and third innings. RBI by
Russell Halvorsen (Howell/Howell),
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) and two more by Avagnano made it 4-0. Halvorsen struck again the next inning for the 5-0 advantage.
Rutgers-Newark closed to 5-4 after four frames, before taking an 8-7 lead after six innings. Stockton re-gained the lead in the seventh when
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) blasted his 11th career home run and Nitti doubled in the second marker for a 9-8 lead.
The home team could not hold the advantage when the Raiders scored twice in the top of the ninth and held on for the 10-9 victory and a sweep of the doubleheader.
Avagnano and Halvorsen each had three RBI on the day, with Avagnano extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
Weinbel led the Scarlet Raiders with five hits on the day with Matthew Storch collecting five RBI. Luke Hagen was the winning pitcher in both games, with Vince Taylor picking up saves in each contest on the hill.
Stockton will be off until Thursday, when the Ospreys will travel to Glassboro to face Rowan University in the first of the home-and-home series. The first pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
