Stockton Advances to NJAC Championship with 4-3 Win

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (6-2) advanced to the NJAC championship match with a 4-3 victory over Rutgers-Newark (10-7) in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Ospreys dropped the doubles point but won all four singles matches that were played.

Sophia Pasquale (Galloway/Holy Spirit) and Kim Wash (Shamong/Seneca) won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, but the Ospreys fell at No. 2 doubles and forfeited No. 3 doubles.

Stockton also forfeited at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, meaning the team's only path to a team victory was to win all four singles matches that were contested. With no margin for error, the Ospreys did just that.

Pasquale and Wash won 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 respectively in the top two spots. Arielis Martinez (Millville/Cumberland County Tech) rallied for a key three-set triumph at No. 3 singles, dropping the first stanza 4-6 before taking the next two 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2.

Rocio Lucero (West New York/Memorial) contributed a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles as the Stockton sweep lifted them past the Scarlet Raptors 4-3.

Stockton will play 41-time defending NJAC champion The College of New Jersey in the NJAC tournament championship on Saturday at noon.
