Haverford, Pa. – Stockton University (1-0) erased a 2-1 deficit by winning the fourth and fifth sets for a 3-2 victory over Haverford (1-1) in the season opener. The Ospreys prevailed 26-24, 16-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-8.
Kate Louer (Clifton/Clifton) led the Ospreys with a match-high 15 kills plus 10 digs and a .353 hitting percentage.
Nicole Palmer (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and
Rileigh Wilson (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) smacked 14 and 11 kills respectively.
Regan Mendick (Newark, Del./Red Lion Christian) dished 22 assists and
Kristen Burton (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) dealt 17 assists. Freshman
Helen Murray (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) made an impressive debut with a team-high 14 digs.
Stockton closed with three straight points, with two on kills by Palmer, to capture the first set 26-24. Haverford took the next two frames and used a 7-0 run to get within 21-20 in the fourth set. The Ospreys then reeled off four points in a row, including two on kills by Wilson, to extend the match 25-20.
Stockton built a 6-5 edge in the fifth set and then scored six consecutive points for a 12-5 advantage. Louer produced four straight kills during the run. Another kill by Louer on match point sealed the triumph, 15-8.
Stockton will continue play at the Haverford Invitational with matches against Lebanon Valley (11:00 a.m.) and Stevens (1:00 p.m.) tomorrow.
