Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (3-3) prevailed 3-2 over University of Scranton (4-2) in a game that took a nine-round shootout to decide. The Ospreys scored the first two goals of the game, but Scranton rallied and tied the contest with 27 seconds remaining in regulation.
Kirsten Bailey (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) and
Carlee Thompson (Gibbsboro/Eastern Regional) led Stockton with a goal and an assist apiece. Bailey also made two defensive saves.
The teams each converted three attempts in the best-of-five shootout and then matched each other through the first three rounds of sudden death for a 4-4 count. After Scranton failed in the ninth round,
Brooke Ruiz (Voorhees/Eastern Regional) potted the game-winning try for the Ospreys in the 3-2 triumph.
Both of Stockton's goals in regulation came on penalty corners. Thompson tipped home a shot by Bailey in the second quarter for a 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes into the third period, Thompson's insert on a corner went to Bailey, whose blast found the cage for a 2-0 lead.
Scranton's Kiera Lamb made it a 2-1 game with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. The Ospreys were 27 seconds away from victory when Olivia Dougherty shoveled in a loose ball to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.
Both teams had scoring chances during the 20 minutes of seven-on-seven OT play. Stockton earned a whopping 12 corners and fired eight shots in the first overtime but could not convert. Scranton outshot the Ospreys 5-3 in the second OT, with Stockton goaltender
Erika Roura (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) making four saves.
Roura earned the win with a season-high 10 saves and
Makayla Alessi (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) contributed a defensive save. Scranton goalie Maclean Thuermer finished with nine stops in the match.
Stockton's next game will be at Washington College (Md.) on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
