Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (5-4) won for the third time in their last four games, with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Widener Pride (4-3) on Wednesday night.
Carlee Thompson (Gibbsboro/Eastern) scored the game winner 26 seconds into the extra frame for the victory.
Stockton dominated the scoresheet outshooting the Pride 21-4 with 13 on net but it was the visitors who struck first. Anabella Cenci tallied her seventh goal of the season at 4:01 on a tap in out front. She converted a crossing pass from the Karly Bervinchak.
After a scoreless second frame, the Ospreys knotted the match just 4:03 into the third period. Thompson inserted a pass from a penalty corner to
Kirsten Bailey (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.), who blasted a shot from the top of the circle for her fifth goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.
At the 41:50 mark, Widener had a chance to re-take the lead on a penalty stroke, but Stockton goalkeeper
Erika Roura (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) made the sprawling save to keep the game tied. The home team had opportunities to win in regulation, but
Riley DeMarco (Hammonton/Cedar Creek) was stopped on consecutive attempts, sending the game into the extra stanza.
In the overtime period, Stockton's
Maura Somers (Berlin/Eastern Regional) drove to the end line, where she found Thompson in front of the cage. Her backhand hit the top right corner for her fifth marker of the season and the 2-1 victory.
Roura made just one save, but it was a huge stop, for her fifth win of the season.
Arwen Fithian made 10 saves in net for Widener.
Stockton will play their second straight home game on Saturday morning against Albright College. Game time is scheduled for 10 am at the Stockton Turf Field.
