Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (6-6) fell to Christopher Newport (13-3) 77-57 on day two of the Stockton Classic. The Captains are second in the Others Receiving Votes section of the D3hoops.com poll, a ranking akin to 27th in the nation.
Eriq Campbell (West Atco/Lindenwold) led the Ospreys with a team-high 18 points plus eight rebounds, which tied for game-high honors.
Justin Harper (Bridgeton/Wildwood Catholic) chipped in with eight points in the game.
Charlie Bell (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) and
Logan Mckee (Glen Mills, Pa./Phelps School) tallied seven points and five rebounds apiece while
Jahmir Payoute (Irvington/Snyder) grabbed seven rebounds and scored six points.
The teams dueled through an evenly-matched first half that featured five ties. Stockton trailed 29-22 with 4:54 remaining but closed the period with a 12-5 run. Campbell started the comeback with a four-point play and Harper finished it with a three-pointer followed by a layup with four seconds left that tied it 34-34 at the break.
Campbell scored 11 first-half points followed by Harper with eight. Stockton shot 6-16 (37.5%) from three-point range and outrebounded CNU 24-16 in the half.
The game slipped away from the Ospreys as the second half progressed. A layup by Campbell with 13:22 remaining got Stockton within 47-45, but they were held to just 13 points the rest of the way. Christopher Newport shot 60% from the field in the second half, and the Ospreys were unable to keep pace in the 77-57 setback.
Toa Hollenbeck paced the Captains with a game-high 25 points followed by Ethan Ward with 12 markers.
Stockton will jump back into NJAC play by hosting Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
