Stockton Downs Eagles 12-3

Winter Haven, FL – Stockton University (1-2) got into the win column for the first time this season, with a convincing 12-3 victory over Juniata College (3-2) on Monday afternoon. It was the first game of the annual spring break trip for the Ospreys.

Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) and freshman Liam Schwinn (West Chester, PA/Henderson) led the 11-hit attack with three hits each. Schwinn has hit in all three games to start his college career, while Avagnano had three RBI on the day.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the second inning with a single marker, before Stockton answered with a pair of runs, knocked in by Avagnano, in the top of the third for a 2-1 lead. Schwinn plated a run to make it 3-1, before the Eagles knotted the game on a two-run homer for a 3-3 tie after four frames.

Both teams went scoreless through the next three innings, when Stockton took over the contest. A run in the seventh inning and five more in the eighth gave Stockton an insurmountable 9-3 advantage.

Russell Halvorsen (Howell/Howell), who scored three times, and Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) each drove in a pair of runs in the stanza. The Ospreys closed out the game with three runs in the final inning for the 12-3 victory. Dom Vizzoni (Trenton/Notre Dame) led all players, scoring four runs in the game.

Tim Welsh (Allentown/Allentown) tossed the first five innings with four strikeouts. He was followed by freshman Anthony Ungaro (Cherry Hill/Paul VI) who earned his first collegiate win with two scoreless innings. Danny Snyder (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) and fellow frosh Dane Jorgensen (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) closed out the win with two scoreless frames, combining for three strikeouts and allowing just two hits.

Stockton will continue their seven-game Florida trip tomorrow against the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 9:30am in Lakeland, Florida.
