Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-9) finally played their home opener but came up on the short end of an 11-3 defeat at the hands of Keystone College (7-7) on a wet and chilly Monday afternoon.
Liam Schwinn (West Chester, PA/Henderson) led the Ospreys with a pair of hits on the day.
The Giants plated two runs in the top of the second inning, then tacked on five more in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. Stockton answered I the bottom half of the fourth frame with a tally on three walks and a hit batter to put their first run of the day on the board.
Keystone added two more runs over the next four innings to push the margin to 9-1 before Stockton tried to rally. In the bottom of the eighth, Schwinn bunted his way on base.
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) smashed a ringing double to put runners on second and third with one away.
Joe Gmitter (Hamilton/Steinert) plated Schwinn with an RBI single, then
Dom Vizzoni (Trenton/Notre Dame) scored Avagnano with a hit, but that is where the rally ended at 9-3. The visitors salted the game away with two more runs in the final frame for the 11-3 victory.
Dominic Mallamaci (Manalapan/Red Bank Catholic) came on in relief and tossed four solid innings scattering four hits with two runs allowed and struck out a career-high six batters.
Colson Bennett led the Giants with three hits, with teammates Ethan Schimony and Dee Rice driving in three runs each. Jacob McTighe earned his first win of the year on the hill.
The Ospreys' next game will bae against Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
