Stockton Downed Twice by Montclair

Galloway, N.J. - Stockton University (4-12, 0-2 NJAC) played its first conference games of the season but the Ospreys were downed twice by Montclair State (18-4, 2-0 NJAC), 21-3 and 12-6.

In the opener, Liam Schwinn (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) doubled, walked twice and scored two runs. Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) tallied one hit, two RBI and a walk. Schwinn and Avagnano each stole a base as well.

Montclair scored eight runs in the top of the first, four of which were unearned, and Stockton was unable to recover from the early deficit. Avagnano singled home two runs in the fifth inning and Schwinn scored on an RBI groundout by Hoyt Smith (Little Silver/Red Bank) in the seventh.

Kevin DiPede (Morganville/St. John Vianney) came out of the bullpen late in the game and pitched three scoreless and hitless innings. DiPede faced just one batter over the minimum.

Sal Cassano (Matawan/Matawan) went 3-4 for his first three career hits in game two. Cassano added a double, two RBI and a run to his performance. Schwinn and Yenuelle Rodriguez (Vineland/Vineland) chipped in with two hits apiece.

In the second inning, an infield single by Cassano scored Avagnano to tie the game 1-1. Montclair opened up a 4-1 lead but Cassano scored on an RBI single by Logan Madison (Warminster, Pa./Warminster) to make it 4-2.

Trailing 7-2, the Ospreys got within 7-5 on RBI by Jimmy Casey (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) and Cassano. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth, with Casey hitting an RBI single for the Ospreys, and the score was 8-6.

Four runs by the Red Hawks in the top of the ninth set the final at 12-6.

Matt Kaliske had four hits, four RBI and three runs for Montclair in the first game. Danny O'Brien totaled three hits, three runs and three RBI for the Red Hawks in the second game.

Stockton will host Marywood University in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
