Stockton Rally Falls Short In Season Opener

(Galloway, NJ) – Richard Stockton (0-1) nearly rallied from a seven-goal deficit but fell short in their comeback attempt as they dropped a 10-7 contest to visiting Marywood University (1-0) on Saturday afternoon. Vinny Gencarelli (Rockaway/Morris Hills) tallied four goals in his first action since 2012 to lead the Ospreys in their season opener of the 2014 season.

The game started slowly as the Pacers got the only marker of the first 15 minutes on a goal by Brandon Terlizzi for a 1-0 lead. Marywood opened up their offense in the second period as they scored four straight tallies to take a 5-0 lead before Gencarelli picked up his first marker of the day with 39 seconds left in the half to cut the advantage to 5-1 at the break. Nick Bologno (Glen Gardner/North Hunterdon) picked up his first helper on the day.

The Pacers kept up the assault in the third stanza as they netted four of the five goals in the period for a 9-2 count. Freshman Lance Pecina (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) scored his first collegiate goal on a man advantage with an assist from James O'Donnell (Mount Laurel/Lenape) for the only Stockton marker of the period.

Stockton then ripped off five consecutive goals during a span of seven-and-a-half minutes at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Bologno hit the net twice, once from Drew Wright (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) and once unassisted, to cut the lead to 9-4. Gencarelli scored three times in a 2:57 span to make it 9-7 with 3:55 left on the clock. O'Donnell dished two of the assists with Bologno adding another helper. The Osprey rally fell short though as Scott Slater added the final score for the Pacers with 1:14 remaining to set the 10-7 final.

In addition to Gencarelli's four scores, Bologno chipped in with two goals and two assists, with O'Donnell dishing three helpers. Freshman goalkeeper Eric Leonard (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) took the loss for Stockton kicking out 13 shots, keeping the Ospreys in the contest.

Cody Bachman tallied three goals and an assist for Marywood with teammate Terlizzi adding three scores and winning 13 of 18 faceoffs (.722). Sam Trill chipped in with two assists. Joe Magargal picked up the victory for the Pacers, making 10 saves and allowing just four goals in 54:57 minutes of playing time. Daghan Hart played 5:03, kicking out four shots in relief.

Stockton will face Gwynedd Mercy at home on Wednesday afternoon in their next match. Opening faceoff is at 4 pm.
