Stockton Downed by Kean, 14-8

(Union, NJ) – Richard Stockton (9-3, 1-2 NJAC) fell behind in the first half and was unable to mount a comeback, resulting in a 14-8 defeat to Kean University (7-5, 1-2) in an NJAC road game. Jenny Carpenter (Egg Harbor City/Absegami) scored a team-high three points on a goal and two assists while three Ospreys netted two goals apiece. Stockton goalkeeper Mary Stornes (Galloway/Absegami) established a new career high with 15 saves.

Kean broke out to a 2-0 lead before Carlie Flake (Tabernacle/Seneca) got the Ospreys on the board with the first of her two tallies just 17 seconds after the Cougars' second goal. Kean scored the next counter but Flake again responded quickly, this time 25 seconds later to bring Stockton within 3-2. Kean seized the momentum with four goals in the last 15:30 of the first half and the Ospreys were down 7-2 at the break.

Stockton started quickly in the second half, with goals by Carpenter and Alicia Leadbeater (Franklinville/Delsea), assisted by Carpenter, in the first 3:23 to close the gap to 7-4. The Ospreys went scoreless for the next eight minutes while Kean widened the margin to 10-4 before Leadbeater netted her second of the game, again assisted by Carpenter.

The Cougars reeled off three more goals in 2:06 for a 13-5 score with 14:47 to play. The Ospreys outscored Kean 3-1 in the last nine minutes as Colleen Knight (Pennsauken/Camden Catholic) potted two counters and Nicole Miller (Southampton/Seneca) added one, but Stockton never seriously threatened and fell 14-8.

Stockton will host Rowan University in an NJAC game on Tuesday at 7 pm.
