Stockton Men's Basketball be seeking their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and sixth straight appearance in the NJAC championship game in 2024-25. Head coach
Scott Bittner has eight returning letter winners, three of whom started at least 18 games last year.
Overall, the roster includes one fifth-year player, three seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen. With just five returnees who averaged 18 minutes per game or more, opportunities will be available for the squad's 10 incoming players. The combination of veterans and newcomers should make for a deep and balanced team.
"I'm extremely excited about the season and the new guys that we are adding to a group that returns three of our four leading scorers from last season. Top to bottom it is as good as any new group we have had," Bittner said. Stockton, which finished in the top two of the conference standings in each of the last four full seasons, was picked fifth in the NJAC preseason coaches poll.
- Junior Tayvon Gaither is the lone returning all-conference player for Stockton. Gaither had a breakout season a year ago, averaging 15.3 points per game and leading the team in rebounds (6.9 rpg) on his way to an NJAC Second Team selection.
- The forward finished second in the NJAC in field goal percentage (.544), fourth in free throw percentage (.789), seventh in rebounds and 11th in scoring last season. Gaither scored in double figures in 21 of 28 games and posted the first three double-doubles of his career.
- Junior EJ Matthews-Spratley is heading into his first full season at Stockton after joining the team in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign. Matthews-Spratley is a versatile scorer who averaged 17.2 points per game and shot 50.3% from the field, 43.8% from behind the arc and 83.8% from the line.
- Matthews-Spratley scored in double figures in 16 of his 17 games as an Osprey and also pulled down 5.1 rebounds from his guard spot and pilfered 23 steals, third on the team.
- Senior Martin Anguelov is healthy after missing the last nine games of the 2023-24 season due to injury. Anguelov started all 19 games before the injury and filled the stat sheet. The sharpshooter averaged 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He hit 41 three-pointers and scored in double figures 12 times.
- Senior Christian Armstrong-Thomas joins Gaither as a key returnee in the paint. Armstrong-Thomas, who averaged 4.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last year, is an active 6-5 forward who adds size and energy around the basket.
- Fifth-year Jamar Johnson is a reliable point guard who brings experience and a steadying influence to the backcourt. Johnson's 88 career games played in a Stockton uniform are by far the most of any player on the team. Last year, he averaged 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while also posting a 1.8 assist-turnover ratio in 27 games off the bench.
- Sophomore Devon Johnson returns after a rookie year in which he saw action in 22 games off the bench and shot 35.7% (5-14) from three-point range and 53.8% (7-13) from inside the arc.
- Sophomore Andrew Crawford offers defense and effort in the backcourt. Crawford played in 25 games including one start as a rookie. Fellow soph Michael Evans returns with nine games of college experience to his credit.
- Josh Wright, a transfer from Rowan, is a proven scorer in the NJAC who will provide energy on offense. In 80 career games, he averaged 8.6 points and made 81 three-pointers while playing just 14.7 minutes per game in his three years for the Profs.
- Eriq Campbell and Josh Randall will provide depth after transferring from Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester. Campbell scored 14.3 points per game and shot 54.4% from the field last year. The 6-7 Randall averaged 11.8 points and 8.0 rebounds in 37 games at the juco level.
- Freshmen looking to push for playing time will be forwards Logan Mckee and Jahmir Payoute plus guards DJ Germann, Miles Chevalier, Anthony Trombetta, Cooper Shivers and Sam Sponheimer.
- Germann and Payoute reach the college level after a year at prep school and bring impressive athleticism. Germann should be a newcomer to watch in the backcourt and the 6-7 Payoute has the length and wingspan to contribute at forward.
- At 6-5, Mckee is a capable three-point shooter who offers an intriguing blend of size and skill. Shivers, a high school teammate of Mckee, is a three-point shooting threat along with Trombetta. Sponheimer and Chevalier also arrive at the college level with the skill sets necessary to succeed.
