Galloway, N.J. – Two Stockton University women's lacrosse players were honored with NJAC weekly awards for their play last week. Senior
Gina Marotta (Montville/Montville) was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week and freshman
Brielle Soltys (Absecon/Holy Spirit) was selected NJAC Rookie of the Week.
Marotta earned her first weekly award of the season and third in her career while Soltys picked up her second NJAC Rookie of the Week nod and third weekly award overall after being named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on February 23.
Marotta was a stalwart on the defensive end in two victories last week. She totaled eight draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers. She began the week with six draw controls, one ground ball, and one caused turnover in a 24-5 win against St. Joseph's Long Island. In a 16-5 win over Farmingdale State, Marotta tallied five ground balls, three caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls.
For the season, the senior is second in the NJAC in ground balls per game (4.13) and ninth in caused turnovers per game (1.75).
Soltys continued her dominant freshman season with another outstanding week, totaling 24 draw controls and scoring six goals, with five assists for 11 points in the two wins.
Against St. Joseph's Long Island, the freshman snagged 10 draw controls and added five goals and two assists for a career-high seven points. Soltys continued her huge week with a Stockton record of 14 draw controls plus one goal and three helpers against Farmingdale State. Her 14 draw controls are the most by an NJAC player in a game this year.
For the season, Soltys leads the NJAC in caused turnovers per game (2.88) and ranks sixth in ground balls per game (3.38) and draw controls per game (4.63) as well as tied for seventh in assists per game (1.50).
Stockton Women's Lacrosse stands at 5-3 after two straight wins. The Ospreys will play just once this week, a Saturday afternoon home tilt against Alvernia University at noon.
