Stockton Blanks Arcadia 2-0

Boxscore

(Galloway, NJ) – Richard Stockton (3-0) won its third straight game to start the season by shutting out Arcadia (0-1) 2-0 in the home opener for the Ospreys.  Stockton righty James DiPiazza (Bayville/Central) turned in a masterful performance, tossing eight shutout innings with five strikeouts and six hits allowed for the win.  Mark Jankowski (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) and Andy Oliver (Penns Grove/ Penns Grove) each went 2-3 at the plate for the Ospreys.

Stockton got on the board in the second inning as Keith Tappert (Toms River/TR East) walked, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error during the steal and then scored on an RBI double by Shawn Kessler (Bayville/Central) for a 1-0 lead.  Stockton added another run in the fifth frame when Jankowski doubled and scored on an RBI single by Oliver for a 2-0 count.

DiPiazza, a transfer from Ocean County College making his first start at Stockton, allowed just one runner to reach third base and walked only one batter in eight scoreless innings on the mound.  Jason Fox (West Deptford/West Deptford) relieved DiPiazza at the start of the ninth frame.

A leadoff single by Brandon Martin was followed by a wild pitch that moved him to second base, and a one-out walk to Patrick Kwiatkowski later put the tying run on board. After a fly ball for the second out, Stockton centerfielder Mike Bush (Manahawkin/Southern) made a diving catch on a line drive by Taylor Schon for the final out to preserve the 2-0 shutout and Fox's first career save.

Martin finished 3-4 at the plate for Arcadia, which outhit Stockton 7-6.  Knights' starter Jordan Hofferman absorbed the loss despite a solid outing in which he allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout in 4.1 innings.  Jason Goldberg tossed 3.2 scoreless frames for Arcadia, yielding two hits and fanning two.

Stockton will continue a four-game homestand on Friday, March 1 when the Ospreys host York College (PA) at 3 pm.  Arcadia will hit the road again tomorrow for a game at Eastern University at 3 pm.
